Named After a Person, Not a Dynasty

George makes watches for people who want to know what time it is and want the thing on their wrist to look good doing it. We didn’t inherit a workshop in the Jura valley or discover a box of our great-grandfather’s movements in an attic — we just got tired of the two options most people are stuck with: a disposable slab of plastic, or a watch priced like a used car because someone wrote a story about mountains on the back of the box. So we build the one in the middle, and we named it after a regular person, because that’s who it’s for.

That means the money goes into the parts you actually interact with. A movement that keeps time without needing a service appointment scheduled around it, a crystal that shrugs off a doorframe, a case finished properly on the back where nobody but you will ever see it, and a strap that doesn’t need replacing the week after it arrives. We spend more than we’d like on lume and less than most on packaging, because one of those still matters at 3 a.m. and the other one gets thrown away in the first ten minutes. There’s no limited run, no waitlist, no drop — if you want one in March, it’ll be there in March.

We’re not trying to sell you a second identity along with the watch. Most people wearing one of ours aren’t collectors, they just wanted something honest that goes with everything and doesn’t announce itself across a room. Wear it to work, wear it to a wedding, wear it in the ocean and don’t think twice. It’ll pick up scratches, and that’s fine — that’s what happens to things that get used instead of stored.

Time Well Kept

“Wore the Ashford through a summer of commuting and the sapphire crystal still has no scratches, which is more than I can say for the phone in the same pocket.”

Nathan R.

“I have small wrists and most 40mm cases sit like a coaster on me. The 36mm case and the shorter lugs actually curve down instead of hanging over the edge.”

Priya S.

“Bought it as my first mechanical watch and expected to babysit it. It’s running about four seconds fast a day, which the shop told me is better than most pieces twice the price.”

Daniel K.

“The quick-release strap pins mean I swap from leather to the mesh bracelet in under a minute, no tools, no scratched lugs. I now own four straps I did not plan on buying.”

Louise M.

Before It Goes on the Wrist

How water-resistant is it, and can it be worn swimming?

The rating is listed on the case back and the product page, usually as a depth in meters or ATM. A 3 ATM rating handles splashes and rain but not submersion, while 5 ATM or higher is generally fine for showering and shallow swimming. Pressing the crown or buttons underwater should be avoided at any rating, since that’s the most common way moisture gets inside.

What’s the right way to size or shorten the strap?

Metal bracelets usually adjust by removing links held in place by small pins or screws, which a jeweler can handle in a few minutes. Leather and silicone straps size through the buckle holes instead. A comfortable fit leaves just enough room to slide a finger under the band without it sliding freely over the wrist bone.

How should the case and crystal be cleaned?

A soft, dry cloth removes fingerprints and dust from the crystal and case. For a metal bracelet, a barely damp cloth with mild soap lifts buildup between the links, followed by a full dry before it goes back on. Leather should stay away from water entirely, and solvents or polishing compounds can strip plating and dull coatings.

How long does the battery last, and can it be replaced?

A quartz battery typically runs two to three years, depending on whether extra functions like a date wheel or chronograph are drawing power. Replacement is straightforward at most repair counters, and having the gasket checked at the same time helps keep the seal intact afterward.

Is the movement quartz or automatic, and does that matter?

Both types appear across different models, and the specific one is noted in the product details. Quartz runs on a battery and keeps very accurate time with almost no upkeep, while automatic movements wind through wrist motion and need regular wear or a winder to stay running. Automatics also drift a few seconds a day by design, which is normal rather than a fault.

What’s covered if it stops keeping accurate time?

Movement faults that show up within the warranty period are typically covered, and sending photos along with the order number is the fastest way to start that process. Battery depletion, scratched crystals, worn straps, and damage from impact or water exposure beyond the rated depth usually fall outside coverage.
